Lemon Grass Restaurant

Lemon Grass Restaurant
This friendly Thai restaurant, not far from the heart of the night bazaar, specializes in curries and sea food dishes. Unlike so many venues in that area it offers exceptionally fair prices, pleasant service and has a laid back feel that many will find endearing. The fact that it is located not far from both Burger King and McDonalds makes it even more appealing, since here we have authentic Thai cooking, healthy and fresh, at the cost of a hamburger. Quite why anybody would consider eating macerated meat instead beggars belief. Lemongrass has room for about 30 to 35 people in an open area, situated along Loh Kroh Road. The nimble staff of young guys keep the music a little loud but create a distinct atmosphere and my only small complaint is that the service is just a little too rapid. My Thai friend and I were still eating the delicious fish cakes which we had ordered as a starter when the rest of the meal arrived, despite a request for it to come later. We had ordered a sea food curry with potatoes, cooked with coconut milk, a dish of mixed vegetables stir fried in garlic and another veggie dish with egg plant. Plus steamed rice and two large Singha beers. We even found room to share their FBI, which is pudding of fried bananas and vanilla ice cream. One proved more than enough for the two of us. Quite a feast and good value at 700 baht including a tip.
Main courses are around 100 baht, starters range around 60- 70 baht and one of the best is Mieng Come which you ‘make’ yourself, wrapping the ingredients (ginger, roasted peanuts, coconut, chili and so on) in edible chaploo leaves. There are also vegetarian spring rolls and other choices. The main menu has plenty of noodle and stir fried rice variations (around 65 baht) and fish dishes, including steamed and deep fried snapper. They offer various beers, a house wine and many soft drinks at modest prices. This is a casual and fun place to eat, worth searching out even if you are not keen on the area. You will find Lemongrass not far from the Royal Lanna Hotel, before the Down Town hotel on the one way Loh Kroh Road. They are open from four in the afternoon until 11p.m. at night.
